My Service Cap

by Written by Bill Buffington

For so long misunderstood by some
Misrepresented by others
Hidden away in my closet
But no more….
I want to proudly wear my service cap!!
It’s a memorialization of the sacrifices made
The lives lost
The fight for the rights and freedoms
Of what I thought were yours and mine….
America the beautiful
Lyrics undefined by those who don’t listen….
Confusing me on why I should wear my service cap
Is it the symbol I thought it was?
The one that represents the constitution I dreamt to be cemented into the conscience of humanity?
The freedom of religion?
The freedom of speech?
Equality?
The ratification of December 6, 1865?
Are do I have to take a knee before you see that “no state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the United States”?
I ask you now to please understand why I ask these questions
It’s because I proudly want to wear my service cap!!
